标题: Budweiser in Italy to be Called Bud [打印本页] 作者: choi 时间: 10-14-2013 08:41 标题: Budweiser in Italy to be Called Bud Sean Carney and Mike Esterl, Sadder-Bud-Weiser in Italy: AB InBev Switches to 'Bud.' Wall Street Journal, Oct 9, 2013. http://online.wsj.com/news/artic ... 4579123382803192524
the last two paragraphs:
"During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when German was the lingua franca of central Europe, Budweis was the name of a city in Bohemia famous for its beer. Adolphus Busch, the German-born founder of Anheuser-Busch, named his US-made beer after the Bohemian city.
"But following the First World War, Czech was restored as the official language in Czech lands and the name of the city was restored to its Czech version.
Note:
(a) The title "Sadder Bud-Weiser" is an attempt to be funny. The "sadder" is the comparative of the adjective "sad." And Budweiser is now Bud in Italy, so the trademark (in US) is split into "Bud-Weiser."
(b) Budweiser http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budweiser
The "České" in "České Budějovice" is a Czech noun for "the Czech."
