Note: "Colin CHINNERY 秦 思源, a Beijing-based artist and curator whose grandparents once owned the house. The history of the family that owned the home is woven with literary love affairs. LING Shuhua 凌叔华, the daughter of a provincial governor, was a painter and writer whose 1937 love affair with poet Julian Bell—the nephew of writer Virginia Woolf whom she met while the two were studying at Wuhan University—led to a long correspondence with Woolf. The home had been in Ling’s family for years and was given to her upon her marriage to a Peking University professor. Ling and her family fled China for the U.K. in 1947 amid the country’s revolution, at which time the home became a factory and, later, a kindergarten. Mr Chinnery, the son of Ling’s daughter 陈小滢 [father 陈西滢] and a British sinologist 秦乃瑞 [John CHINNERY, deceased], recalled bringing his grandmother back to the location in 1990. At the time, it was the home of Shijia Hutong Kindergarten."

("Tongling 安徽省 铜陵市, China’s 'copper city,' has been at the forefront of reform since the 1990s * * * Competitive elections in China are usually confined to the village level – the lowest of five administrative levels. Tongling is trying its hand at such elections at the city district level, somewhat higher on the power ladder. In March, the city’s residents elected 18 community representatives in the four districts that comprise Tongling. The reps don’t sit on a city council–there isn’t one in Tongling. Instead, they act as liaisons between various communities and the city government. Sixteen of those 18 were nominated by the Communist Party, assuring their election. In two cases in the Tongguanshan district 铜官山区, though, Tongling took a stab at democracy. Local residents nominated people to run for director, the formal name of the neighborhood rep. They also nominated people to run for two lower-level vice-director positions and six board-member seats. The board director, vice directors and board members collectively operate as a kind of community board")
