When reading the report, I noticed the mountains are of limestone, a
crystal form of calcium carbonate. I worried the stone might crack.
Having read your reply, I just now went to scientific archive and web.
Surprisingly I found nothing about harming rock. I did find a report that
allegedly was the first on biodiversity.
McMillan MA and Larson DW, The effects of rock climbing on the vegetation of
the Niagara Escarpment in Southern Ontario, Canada. Conservation Biology 16
: 389–398 (2002).
which was followed with
McMillan MA, Nekola JC and Larson DW, Effects of Rock Climbing on the Land
Snail Community of the Niagara Escarpment in Southern Ontario, Canada.
Conserv Biol 17: 616-621 (2003).

In my view, the differences were minor, even trivial (not as alarming as I
imagined yesterday). Then, the principal investor, Dr. Larson, seems to
negate the (few) unfavorable research reports up to that point by presenting
Kuntz KL and Larson DW, Influences of microhabitat constraints and rock-
climbing disturbance on cliff-face vegetation communities. Conserv Biol 20:
821-32 (2006).

(Abstract: "Most work on climbing disturbance, however, has not controlled
for variation in microsite characteristics when comparing areas with and
without climbing presence. * * * [After introduction of control, as any
scientific experiment should, the authors found:] Climbed sites had not
diverged toward a separate vegetation community; instead, they supported a
subset of the species found on pristine cliff faces.")
