Quote:
(a) "n contrast to its reputation for being permissive on firearms, Texas is one of six states, including California, New York and Florida [the other two states are Illinois and South Carolina], that currently bars citizens from openly carrying handguns. People who want to carry handguns in public on their person must obtain concealed-weapons permits and keep the weapons hidden.
"Texas currently allows citizens to openly carry long guns in public, however. That has spurred gun-rights groups to carry assault rifles into restaurants and stores and along the sidewalks adjoining the Texas Capitol, to highlight what they see as a senseless legal distinction.
(b) Texas is also poised to enact a law "to allow some students and university employees to carry concealed handguns on college campuses. * * * It would make Texas one of only eight states with laws permitting concealed guns on college campuses, and the largest state to do so. * * * [to do so on campus] A Texas resident must be at least 21 years old or on active military duty to obtain a license. Private colleges, according to the bill, could adopt rules barring campus carry.
(c) "Despite the Lone Star State’s cowboy image, open carry and campus carry remain controversial. A February poll by the University of Texas and Texas Tribune found that, while most Texas voters supported carrying handguns in public, 45% believed it should be through concealed, licensed weapons, with only 32% supporting some form of open carry. Respondents were split on campus carry, with 47% in support and 45% opposed.
