(“As a young reporter, Babel rode with the Red cavalry against the Whites in the Russian civil war in 1920. He wrote propaganda for a Bolshevik paper packed with exhortations—’Beat them, Red Fighters! Clobber them to death, if it is the last thing you do! Right away! This minute! Now!’ But he also kept a diary that records his disillusion. ‘They all say they’re fighting for justice and they all loot,’ he noted”)
My comment:
(a) Read only the third item: “Red Cavalry By Isaac Babel (1926).”
The book was published in Russian in 1926. Its English translations (by different translators) are Norton 2003, Penguin 2006, and Pushkin 2014.
