Ralph Jennings, Demand for Tablets, Smartphones Creates Jobs in Taiwan. IDG News, Mar 28, 2011.
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/223476/demand_for_tablets_smartphones_creates_jobs_in_taiwan.html
("to meet the fast-growing global consumer demand for smartphones and tablet PCs, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) plans to hire 4,000 to 5,000 people, up to 3,000 of those by the end of June")

My comment: There is teh other side of the coin: Taiwanese PC makers Acer and Asus, which had become teh first and second largest producers of web books, are watching helplessly as sales of tablets and smartphones soar. Acer had been in smartphone making business but was unsuccessful and Asus had not been. It seems that they may have a hard time adapting. At last, Asus last week introduced a tablet in Taiwan (possibly to test the water). And Verizon, followed by AT & T a week ago, announced Acer Iconia Tab A501 Android tablet coming in 2Q11.

Quote:

"Globalfoundries Inc. expects revenue to rise at least 14% to more than $4 billion this year and aims to overtake United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) of Taiwan to be the world's second-largest contract chip maker by revenue, its chief executive said Tuesday.

"UMC spokesman Richard Yu said the company won't comment on Globalfoundries' strategy and it will focus on sustaining profitability and market share.
