Bob Davis and Lingling Wei, Who Won the US-China Trade War?  Neither country got the concessions it sought, and both damaged their economies. The real beneficiaries? Vietnam and others who stepped into the breach. Wall Street Journal, May 21, 2022, at page C1 (in the Review section that appears every Saturday).

Excerpt in windows of the print:

'We made it more costly for [the Chinese], but they are still trying their same politics.'  CLETE WILLIAMS[,] Former Trump trade negotiator  (insertion original)

45% of Americans now view China as America's 'greatest enemy' -- four times as many as made that choice in 2018.

'Vietnam positioned itself well to take advantage of the crises that occurred.' TRINH NGUYEN[,] Hong Kong economist

My comment:
(a) Lingling Wei 魏玲灵 "is the chief China correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and co-author of 'Superpower Showdown.' She covers China's political economy, focusing on the intersection of business and politics. Born and raised in China, she has a MA in journalism from NYU."

(i) She has been with WSJ since 2011, based in Beijing until 2020 when China expel foreign reporters. :resently she lived in New York, New York (as "chief China correspondent").

("was born in Jiangxi province * * * in the 1990s, Lingling headed off to Fudan University in Shanghai to learn journalism. * * * In 1999, she was accepted into NYU to get her masters degree in business journalism. * * * 'I became American citizen in late 2010 * * * [In] late 2010 you know, I was offered this job in China, and I obviously took it right away. * * * The Chinese state regulations really don't allow Chinese citizens to write for foreign media outlets. So having a blue [US] passport enabled me to do that.' * * * The past 10 years of living in China really made me feel a lot more like American. I'm no longer a Chinese * * * I'm really a Chinese American' ")

(b) Text of this article has no sectional headings.
(c)
(i) "Dartmouth College economist Davin Chor [currently associate professor; eaning bachelor's, master's and PhD, all in economics and all in Harvard] and University of Hong Kong economist Bingjing Li"

It is hard to tell their (Chor's and Li's) nationalities, because in 2018 both were faculty of National University of Singapore.
(ii) "Chuan He 何川 [female] of Huazhong University of Science and Technology 华中科技大学 (湖北省武汉市), Mingzhi Xu 徐铭梽 of Peking University and Karsten Mau of Maastricht University."

Maastricht University

(1976; public; in City of Maastricht, the Netherlands)
(iii) "Trinh Nguyen 阮贞 [female], a Natixis economist in Hong Kong"

Natixis
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natixis
("is a French corporate and investment bank created in * * * 2006 from the merger"/ table: Headquarters  Paris, France)
(iv) Luxshare Precision Industry Co, Ltd  立讯精密工业股份有限公司 (2004- ; based in Shenzhen; 上市市场: 深圳证券交易所)

(d) "46% of Vietnam's exports to the U.S. now consist of electrical machinery, three times the percentage as before the trade war. Lower-value textile and apparel shipments also increased but at a much slower rate.  Over this period, America's trade deficit with Vietnam also exploded nearly threefold to $90 billion. * * * Chinese manufacturers also rushed to set up operations in Vietnam. More than half the fresh exports from Vietnam to the US during the trade war originated from Chinese-owned factories, estimates Patrick Van den Bossche, a Kearney partner. Since 2017, Chinese investment in Vietnam more than doubled to $1.9 billion in 2020."

However, the illustration in the article clearly shows it is Taiwan, which may explain why Taiwan's GDP growth rate last year was the first in Asia. But there is no need for Taiwan to 强出头 or even 出头.
