Heather Kaye, China Helped Raise My Kids. They Are Fine. An American fashion designer who lived for 16 years in China, where she and her husband raised two daughters. New York Times, Jan 19 2023 (op-ed) https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/ ... enting-culture.html

My comment:
(a) "streets and the green spaces around every corner were kept immaculate, and the sense of civic pride was palpable."
(i) I left Taiwan in 1984 and do not claim I know what Taiwanese think; I do not have -- never have -- Taiwanese (or Chinese) friend here. Taiwanese thought Only Singapore could accomplish immaculate space(but had no intention to adopt that, which I understood when I learned in America from microeconomics that it requires a lot of effort to achieve or maintain below 4 % of disorder.
(ii) Taiwanese did not harbor civic pride over Taiwan, because everything was heavily polluted (air, water etc). Then in late 1990s, my aunt of Taipei visited Boston; we passed by a stream (Muddy River that passes through Fenway that had became increasingly clear due to government efforts and that by then one could see about two feet under the surface if the stream); to my surprise she was not impressed but commented Taipei did better).

In 2010, Heather and Itee Soni co-founded FINCH Designs with the goal of upending the most unsustainable aspects of the fashion industry: fast fashion cycles, body negativity, throw-away quality and environmentally damaging raw materials. In April 2019 FINCH Designs became Loop Swim, focusing on eco-swimwear made exclusively from Repreve® recycled PET plastic bottles. Loop swimwear is responsibly made in China, and retails globally with value-aligned hotel, resort and specialty boutique partners")
