My comment: Surprise, surprise: Europe sells it to Taiwan--AND China says
nothing.

(A) Today (Feb. 5), Taiwan FIRST announced the purchase--from Ministries of
Defense and Foreign Affairs.

("The Eurocopter deal marks only the third European arms sale to Taiwan in
the last 40 years"--following a 1981 Dutch deal of two Zwaardvis (Swordfish)
-class submarines in 1981 and a 1992 Taiwan order of six French La Fayette-
class frigates)

("Taiwan said earlier it would buy up to 20 military helicopters from Europe
" but three for now)

(1) Yes, Eurocopter has a joiont venture in China to make helicopters. But,
(1) the type is EC175, not EC225 that Taiwan ordered, and (2) EC175 is in
the drawing board. See
Helicopter industry readies to take off in China. Asian Aerospace, Dec. 14,
2010.
http://news.asianaerospace.com/?p=2653
Quote:
"Eurocopter and [China's] Avicopter are now jointly developing the six-ton
EC175 helicopter, also called Z15, in China.
The two companies equally share design and production responsibilities.
There will be two assembly lines, one in Harbin, and the other in Marignane,
France.
(2) Imagine the aforesaid joint venture could produce EC225 in time for
Taiwan, Taiwan laws ban import of such from China. Although both Taiwan and
China are members of World Trade Organization, ther eremains a lot of trade
barriers between the two. Conceivably China could have complained to WTO but
elected not to, so as to avert any contact with Taiwan in international
organization. Ostrich mentality? Possibly.
