("Beijing's reaction to the Japanese Coast Guard's boarding of a Chinese
fishing boat and the detention of the captain near the disputed Senkaku
Islands has been nothing less than astounding. * * * But equally surprising
is the fact that Japan shows no signs of backing down.")

My comment: The commentary states, "In 2003 and 2004 Chinese submarines were
detected in Japanese waters, and in one case a nuclear powered attack
submarine transited submerged through Japan's territorial sea in violation
of international law."

I learned of this report when it was published. For lack of access to the
newspaper web site, I was waiting for somehitng like this. It finally

The submarine in the SCMP report is the same as that depicted in Strategy
Page ("The third Yuan is the one just launched, and appears to be a bit
different from the first two").
