("In 1750, China's population was about 179 million, 30 million more than all of Europe. At the peak of his reign, the Qianlong Emperor presided over a realm of almost 4.6 million sq. mi. (12 million sq km), making it the largest empire in the world.")

Note:
(1) object lesson (n): "something that serves as a practical example of a principle or abstract idea  e.g. His life story is an object lesson in how not to run a business."

But the title of the Time report, with the plural form of "object," means multiple objects.

Both definitions in this posting are from www.m-w.com.
(2) Qianlong Garden 故宫 乾隆花园

Qianlong Garden is also known as Ningshougong (Palace of Tranquil Longevity) Garden 宁寿宫花园.

Gate of Spreading Auspiciousness 衍祺门 (乾隆花园的正门)
Hall of Fulfilling Original Wishes 符望阁
Building for Enjoying Lush Scenery 萃赏楼
Studio for Self-Restraint 抑斋
Building of Extending Delight 延趣楼
Studio of Exhaustion from Diligent Service 倦勤斋
(3) phosphorescence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphorescence
(related to fluorescence: Unlike fluorescence, a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. The slower time scales of the re-emission are associated with "forbidden" energy state transitions in quantum mechanics)
(4) exquisite (adj): "marked by flawless craftsmanship or by beautiful, ingenious, delicate, or elaborate execution <an exquisite vase>"
(5) Qianlong Emperor (1711-1799; reign 1735-1796 (60 years, 124 days); surname: Aisin Gioro, name: Hungli 弘历/弘曆)

Aisin Gioro
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aisin_Gioro
(The word aisin means gold in the Manchu language, and "gioro" is the name of the place in present day Yilan 依兰县, Heilongjiang Province)
(6) The anthology alludes to 四库全书.
(7) George III of the United Kingdom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_III_of_the_United_Kingdom
(1738-1820; reign 1760-1820; presiding over American Revolution)
(8) Old Summer Palace, known in China as the Gardens of Perfect Brightness 圆明园 and originally called the Imperial Gardens 御园.

(9) baizi tu 百子 图
(10) Kangxi Emperor (1654-1722; reign 1661-1722 (61 years, 305 days))

(11) Grey Gardens
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Gardens

* Why "Grey"?

"It was truly a gray garden. The soft gray of the dunes, cement walls and sea mists gave us our color scheme as well as our name....nepeta, stachys, and pinks....clipped bunches of santolina, lavender and rosemary made gray mounds here and there. Only flowers in pale colors were allowed inside the walls, yet the effect was far from insipid....I close my eyes and sense again the scent of those wild roses, the caress of the hot sun on our backs as we sauntered to and fro from our bath and lazy mornings on the beach." — Anna Gilman Hill, former owner of Grey Gardens in her book Forty Years of Gardening.

My comment: In the print but not online, the painting was magnified for the woman to the right, standing right in front of a laquered painting which reflected her larger-than-life face.
