Foreign minister Maehara testified before lower house: Concerning Senkaku territorial right, supreme leader of China Deng Xiaoping stated in 1978 that it could be temporarily shelved; but "that was Mr. Deng's unilateral pronouoncement, to which Japan did not agree. In reply to lawmaker 神風英男 of Democratic Party of Japan, Maehara emphasized Japan's position that Senkaku Islands were Japan's historical territory, and that there is no territorial dispute between China and Japan.
China in early 1970s advocated ownership of Senkakus, but in the lead-up to the 1978 signing of Japan and China peace treaty, Mr. Deng stated the issue should be left to the next generation, and approved the shelving to facilitate deepening of relationship.
