Quote:

"The war between the United States and Spain in eighteen ninety-eight was one of the shortest in American history. The fighting lasted about three months.

" American occupation of the Philippines made the United States a major power in the Far East. As such, it began to develop new policies toward Asia. Especially a new policy toward China. Americans had been trading with China for years, but not heavily. As the American economy grew, however, businessmen saw China -- with a population of four hundred million people -- as a great market for American products.

"Secretary Hay refused to wait for them to act. So in May, nineteen hundred, he announced that all the nations involved had given their approval to the 'Open Door' policy.

"The results of the Boxer Rebellion and the Spanish-American War made clear that the new century would have a new world power: the United States.

My comment:
(a) Emilio Aguinaldo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilio_Aguinaldo
(1869-1964; played an instrumental role during the Philippines' revolution against Spain, and the subsequent Philippine-American War that resisted American occupation./ became the Philippines' first President. He was also the youngest (at age 29))

(i) Independence Day (Philippines)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_(Philippines)
(June 12, 1898; The 1898 Declaration of Independence, however, was not recognized by the United States or Spain)
(ii) Philippines
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines
(Table: Independence from Spain -  Declared June 12, 1898

Footnote b: "Philippine revolutionaries declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, but the Spanish claim of sovereignty was passed from Spain to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. This led to the Philippine-American War."
)

If a land is not a sovereign nation, it has no say. This is interntational law. This may say something about Taiwan, and especially about Senkaku islands. Taiwan was not a nation in 1895 when Japan annexed Senkaku islands that year. In other words, if China has no claim about said islands, it is impossible Taiwan may have under internationla law.

(b) Theodore Roosevelt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt
(was Assistant Secretary of the Navy when Spanish American War broke out in 1898; resigned and led a small regiment in Cuba known as the Rough Riders; After the war, he returned to New York and was elected Governor)
(c) John Hay
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hay
(1838-1905;  secretary of state 1898-1905 under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt)

Pres. Mckinley won a seond term, was assassinated on Sept. 6 and died a few days later on Sept. 14, 1901.

Antibiotics were not discovered until Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in 1928.

The report stated when assuming presidency, Roosevelt "was forty-two years old -- the youngest man ever to hold the office."
