(a) 独联体集体安全防务条约组织 Collective Security Treaty Organisation

(CSTO; founded in 2002; Type Military alliance; Headquarters Moscow; members Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan)

* Turkic people
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkic_peoples
(According to Book of Zhou 周書 [record of 北周, in 南北朝], the original meaning of "Turk" is "helmet", and that they may have taken this name because of the shape of the Altai Mountains. According to Mahmud of Kashgar, an 11th century Turkic scholar, and various other traditional Islamic scholars and historians, the name "Turk" stems from Tur, one of the sons of Japheth)

Quote:
"By summer 2001, they [nations] all faced a common threat: the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. This helped cement their relations and led to the SCO's formation. Many years prior to that, in 1967, Southeast Asian nations created ASEAN to ward off the Communist threat coming from China and its 'cultural revolution.'
"But if that [Iran's admission to SCO] happens, it would also be logical to admit India and Pakistan, although China is against granting India membership. Otherwise Afghanistan risks becoming caught up in a tug-of-war between at least two regional powers.
My comment: I wonder what "two regional powers" may be. It can not be India(which is not a member of SCO. That leaves China--and Russia.
Afghanistan

(It shares borders with Pakistan in the East, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far east)
(d) Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Cooperation_Organisation
(founded in 2001 in Shanghai; six founding members: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan; Except for Uzbekistan, the other countries had been members of the Shanghai Five, founded in 1996)
Thus the above VOA report is correct on its face in saying, "这个组织 [CSTO] 包括了除了中国之外的所有上合组织成员." But CSTO has member states (Armenia and Belarus) that are not SCO.

My comment: Listen up. But of course Beijing will reject it, for it does not want to be a lap dog of United States--though US allies (such as Taiwan, Japan, Canada and UK) do not deem themselves lap dogs.
