(a) The article states, "Modern naval mines were widely used for the first time over a century ago, during the Russo-Japanese war (1904- 1905)."

* Russian battleship Petropavlovsk (1897)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_battleship_Petropavlovsk_(1897)
(Commissioned 1897; section 1 Name: "The name Petropavlovsk refers to the Siege of the port of Petropavlovsk [on Kamchatka Peninsula] during the Crimean War")
* Japanese battleship Yashima
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Yashima
(八島; Commissioned 1897; The name "Yashima" is from an ancient poetic name for "Japan")
Translation: The book Kojiki (712 AD) listed eight islands as Japan (which did not include Hokaido, by the way) in part because 8 was a sacrosanct number.
* Japanese battleship Hatsuse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Hatsuse
(初瀬; Commissioned 1901)
Ja.wikipedia.org says, "艦名の由来は奈良県を流れる初瀬川による." The name of the battleship came from the river that flows through Nara Prefecture. Ja. wikipedia.org also says of that river: 下流は「大和川」(Yamatogawa)、上流は「初瀬川」.

(c) Palau
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palau
(Following its defeat in the Spanish-American War, Spain sold Palau and most of the rest of the Caroline Islands to Germany in 1899. Control passed to Japan in 1914 and during World War II the islands were taken by the United States in 1944)

("Having failed to defend adequately against the Inchon Invasion in mid-September 1950, the North Koreans were not to be caught twice in that kind of trap. Their Soviet supporters had provided thousands of sea mines, plus technical advisors, and these began to show their effectiveness in late September as several U.S. and South Korean Navy ships struck mines off the Korean east coast, with some vessels being sunk.")

(b) The roadside bombs kill much fewer American and NATO soldiers nowadays (see my posting TOMORROW, about a report series at Boston Globe). As far as I can tell, drones and local villagers' reactions (they avoid the spot or occasionally tattle) account for the progress, rather than technological improvement to locate them (bombs) once they are planted.

I simply can not tell if this is a rehash of "mutual non-denial" he advocated prior to his 2008 election as Taiwan's president, or if this is something new.
