I do not know if it is true or possible to get citizenship (not merely permanent residency) in such a short time. This report says Dr Liu earned his PhD in 3 years and spent five years afterwards in US (Yale, Columbia and Sandoz, at web page 2). A rolling stone gathers no moss; he can not possibly get his PR through sponsorship. The only chance for him was to get one through Tiananmen massacre; even so I am unaware if one can obtain US citizenship in a couple of years.
