My comment: The report cites
(a) US Satellite Snaps China's First Aircraft Carrier at Sea. Guardian, Dec 15, 2011 ("agencies") http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/ ... rrier?newsfeed=true
("DigitalGlobe said one of its satellites took the picture on 8 December and an analyst at the firm spotted the ship this week while searching through images")
(b) Thomas Harding, First Satellite Image of Chinese Aircraft Carrier Reveals Absence of Key Component. Daily Telegraph, Dec 15, 2011. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ ... -key-component.html
(i) BBC mistakenly states "甲板上并没有安装舰载机阻拦网." Anyone with knowledge of modern aircraft carrier is aware it is not a net but a cord, which Daily Telegraph is correct in saying the carrier is "missing arrestor wires used to prevent jet fighters going into the sea after landing."
(ii) showstopper (n):
"1: an act, song, or performer that wins applause so prolonged as to interrupt a performance
2: something or someone exceptionally arresting or attractive <the gold crown was the showstopper of the exhibition>
3: one that stops or could stop the progress, operation, or functioning of something" www.m-w.com
Note: That was Colonel Gaddhafi's fifth son Mutassim, who along other members of Gaddhafi's inner circle, were killed after their final stand (Sirte, Libya) was overrun in last October.

("The Philippines is asking the U.S. for some used F-16 jet fighters. The Philippines is broke, so the proposed deal is for free F-16s * * * Normally, the Philippines has no practical need for a jet fighter force. * * * The Philippines could never afford to buy, or even just maintain warplanes sufficient to deal with a Chinese air threat.")
