标题: 'The Danger in Xi's Rebuff to Obama' [打印本页] 作者: choi 时间: 3-2-2012 12:00 标题: 'The Danger in Xi's Rebuff to Obama' Philip Stephens, The Danger in Xi's Rebuff to Obama. Financial Times, Mar 2, 2012 (columnist). http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/50a2c2 ... b-00144feabdc0.html
Quote:
When Xi visited White House: "The president [Obama] said they both had an interest in setting up a serious dialogue between the US and Chinese armed forces. * * * His [Xi's] response was blunt: No.
"The impression taken by US officials from the encounters was that once he is China’s president Mr Xi is likely to be tougher, more nationalist and closer to the military than Hu Jintao. This means that managing the most important relationship of the 21st century is unlikely to get any easier.
"A year or so ago, according to one US account, China’s military hawks came close to overturning the cautious approach of Beijing’s foreign policy establishment. They were held in check by Mr Hu and Dai Bingguo, the state councillor in charge of foreign affairs.
My comment:
(a) It appears there is no need to sign in, in order to read the column.
(b) The first sentence of the column says (right before quotation 1), "When Xi Jinping tipped up at the White House recently Barack Obama made a proposal."
