Lunch with the FT: the Chinese novelist Han Han also races cars and writes an outspoken blog that has received half a hits. Over spicy beef and potatoes, he talks to David Pilling about the downfall of Bo Xilai and why his fellow citizens must reform not revolt. Financial Times, Apr 21, 2012. http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/3 ... .html#axzz1shz69io0
Excerpt in the window of print: 'Everybody thinks the evil of the nation is caused by an institution when, in reality, everybody is an accomplice'
My comment:
(a) I have not read ny of his writing. Judging from this informal interview, Han Han appears to be independent-minded.
(b) To read the article, there is no need to sign in.
(c)
(i) The "elliptical" in "elliptical character" is an adjective that means
"2a : of, relating to, or marked by ellipsis or an ellipsis
b (1) : of, relating to, or marked by extreme economy of speech or writing
(2) : of or relating to deliberate obscurity (as of literary or conversational style)"
(ii) ellipsis (n; Latin, from Greek elleipsis ellipsis, ellipse, from elleipein to leave out, fall short, from en in + leipein to leave):
"1a : the omission of one or more words that are obviously understood but that must be supplied to make a construction grammatically complete b : a sudden leap from one topic to another
2: marks or a mark (as …) indicating an omission (as of words) or a pause
Examples of ELLIPSIS; “Begin when ready” for “Begin when you are ready” is an example of ellipsis"
