标题: Made in USA [打印本页] 作者: choi 时间: 6-12-2012 15:20 标题: Made in USA (1) Stephanie Strom, For Ohio Pottery, a Small Revival;
New York Times, June 12, 2012
("American Mug’s production has kept four people employed and created eight more jobs here")
My comment:
(a) Read only the first several sentences, and that is enough. It seems a hype to me that Americans are excited about creaing FOUR jobs.
(b) East Liverpool, Ohio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Liverpool,_Ohio
(a city; located along the Ohio River and borders the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia)
(c) Regarding the company name "American Mug and Stein Company."
stein (n; probably from German Steingut stoneware, from Stein stone + Gut goods; First Known Use 1855):
"a large mug (as of earthenware) used especially for beer" www.m-w.com
(d) About the surname Honighausen.
(i) The German and Jewish surname Honig is German noun for honey (derived from Middle High German honec, honic).
German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): habitational name from any of several places in central and southern Germany called Hausen.
(ii) The "hausen" is German intransitive verb that means "reside, live."
The German noun "haus" is "house" in English.

My comment:
(a) I can not understand why the author is excited about Flextronics, which intrigued me as an erstwhile (but now fading fast) rival of Foxconn, is not an American company at all.
Flextronics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flextronics
(Headquarters Singapore; Founded in Silicon Valley by Joe McKenzie who sold it to 3 Americans in 1980; In 1981, becomes the first US manufacturer to go offshore by setting up a manufacturing facility in Singapore; In 1990 Singapore as its new base)
On May 4, 2012 Pres Obama, who had planned to visit Globalfoundries, abruptly changed his plan but toured its vicinity instead: College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering’s Albany NanoTech Complex at UAlbany. http://cnse.albany.edu/WorldClas ... anoTechComplex.aspx
It was speculated that the reason was Glofo was now under the management of UAE.
Flextronics lags behind Foxconn more and more, in revenue. That is what it means, when the report describes Flextronics as "the world’s second-biggest electronics manufacturer-for-hire," (paragraph 2) "which grossed $29 billion in the year ended in March." (paragraph 7)

(e) TechShop www.techshop.ws
("a membership-based workshop that provides members with access to tools and equipment, instruction, and a community of creative and supportive people so they can build the things they have always wanted to make")
It bills itself as "America's 1st nationwide open-access public workshop."
