(b) The Dutch and English surname Stockman (both Middle Dutch and Middle English:  stock ‘stump’, ‘stick’), for someone living by a tree stump or for a tree cutter.
(c) Farah Stockman is a columnist and editorial writer for the Boston Globe, herself having graduated from Harvard College (the undergraduate division of Harvard U) in 1996.
(d) 呂秀蓮 was born in 1944, while 馬英九, in 1950 in Hong Kong (so the article was not totally accurate when it stated, "Ma Ying-jeou, who was born ion mainland China to a senior KMT party official."

(e) The article said, "Since then, she [Lu] has survived an assassination attempt, five years [of] imprisonment."
* The assassination attempt occurred in Tainan on Mar 19, 2004 (the eve of presidential election); also shot was Mr Chen Shui-bian.
* The imprisonment followed "Kaohsiung Incident" where she delivered a 20-minute speech on Dec 10 (Human Rights Day), 1979.  

(f) The article observed, "Renowned China expert Jerome Cohen convinced her [Lu] to take a fellowship at Harvard Law School."

In fact, she obtained a second LLM 法學碩士學位 after one year (1977-1978) in Harvard. Her first LLM was from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1969-1971).  

(g) The article remarked, "Ma's father was so dedicated to the dream of reuniting with China that after his [the father's] death, a slogan about it was written on his urn that held his ashes."

The father was 馬鶴凌
