标题: Historically Speaking, Men Lose Ground to Women But Still Fare Well
My comment:
(a) A book review in (1), and a columnist' view in (2). Men are losing ground, a new book asserts (a proposition which is not new) and analyzes (from a novel perspective).
(b) The book:

Hanna Rosin, The End of Men; And the rise of women. Riverhead, 2011.
(c) dial down (v): "to reduce or become reduced <to dial down an argument>"

(ii) This is what a dial (as a noun) look like:
dial (measurement)

(used for displaying the setting or output of a timepiece, radio, clock, watch, or measuring instrumen)

("Here in America, many men have dialed down their ambitions, and not simply in response to a loss of job opportunities. Although three-fourths of the jobs lost in the recent recession were in fields that are overwhelmingly male (including construction, manufacturing and finance), the same number of new ones emerged in health fields, service industries and teaching. Yet surprisingly few men are entering these areas or seeking the education they would need to do so")

("When there's big social change, the people who were on the top of the old order are bound to cling o the old ways. The people who were at the bottom are bound to experience a burst of energy. They,re going to explore their new surroundings more enthusiastically")
