(1) Big spenders add sparkle to Chinese wedding market. Xinghua, Apr.

Quote:

"By all accounts, the wedding train is in full-steam in China despite the
gloomy economic outlook.

"'The generation born in the 1980s, China's last baby boom period, is now
getting married. Such a population is huge enough to fend off the negative
impact of the financial crisis,' said Liu Yinan, chief wedding planner of I
Do! Wedding Service, a wedding planning agency based in Beijing.

My comment: Taiwan is distinct from China--custom-wise. In Taiwan there are-
-and will be--few marriage in the lunar year that started Jan. 26, 2009, as
it is called lone-phoenix year 孤鸞年. The superstition is that if couples
get married in 孤鸞年 which actually comes frequently, the husbands die
young, leaving the wife (phoenix) behind.

"この年に生まれた女性は気が強い

"一般庶民の間では、この年生まれの女性は気性が激しく、夫を尻に敷き、夫の命を
縮める(男を食い殺す)とされ

Japanese.

(2) Wedding Costs in China Rise 4600 Percent in 30 Years. Epoch Times, Apr.

The report cited China's newspaper Modern Express 现代快报 of Nanjing. In
fact, it is 中新社:

Why Single Mothers in China Are So Rare. Feb. 5, 2009.
http://www.teachabroadchina.com/abortion-china-single-mothers/

My comment: Back in Taiwan, which was up to a quarter of a century ago, I
have heard so many young woman, teens and early twenties, getting abortions,
which was illegal in Taiwan. So they went to the back alleys to have it
done by quacks. So I am pro-choice, unconditionally in support of
legalization of abortions.
