My comment:
(a) There is no need to read the text. Unfortunately, both the Chinese and English version of 纽约时报中文网 contains a graphic that shows the changes in suicide rates of "all ages" and "ages 65 and older" for S Koreans from 1999 to 2010 inclusive ("Source: Statistics Korea"). Nor does the same report in Nytimes.com. ONLY the print version has.
(b)
(i) A look at the graphic will tell a reader how suicide rates over years have steadily increased, for "all ages," from ~15 to 31 per 100,000 people (in Wikipedia), the latter being probably the highest in the world.
(ii) As for "ages 65 and older," the graphic says the increase was from ~36 (1999) to ~82 (2009) per 100,000 people .
(c) I am not proud of Taiwan, either. Before I left Taiwan in 1984, quite a few old people were neglected (including my grand parents, which I have come to regret much)--and even forced to die after contracting a cancer.

(b) The report says that a promising Oculus Rift headset, may change that--made by a Southern California start-up called Oculus VR. http://www.oculusvr.com/
The video in the home page of Oculus VR is mostly talks. Only from 4:18 (4 minutes and 16 seconds into the video) to 4:25 contains so called virtual reality (which can not be, because the computers we use are not capable of that).
