Patti Waldmeir, China embraces freedom of the road; Cars are liberating the
country as they did in the US in the 1950s. Financial times, Apr. 23, 2010.

Note:
(a) jalopy (n): "a dilapidated old vehicle"

Both English definitions in this posting are from www.m-w.com.
(b) runabout (n): "a light usually open wagon, car, or motorboat"

runabout (car)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runabout_(car)

I know nothing about cars, so I do not know why Golf is called a runabout.

My comment:
(a) Few people like to watch movies before the sky is dark. That is why
drive-ins is losing ground in US.
(b) The report says people in mature markets (such as US) are not so fond of
cars any more. That is due to environmental concerns, and governments have
tried hard to improve public transportation to lure people away from cars.
