My comment: Many farmers in Taiwan had water buffalo 水牛 to do farm work, so they refused to eat beef. When I was a kid there, beef noodles were uncommon (we ate noodle with 蔥花 and few pieces of small 豬瘦肉片 at stalls around the corners).

I modify the original posting by adding these.
(1) Original: "(b) 藺草, Cyperus malaccensis, is a sedge."
The VOA report obviously quotes the locals as saying, "编草席用的蔺草也是当地特有." In fact, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture indicates this species is found throughout Asia and part of Australia.
www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?318235
(2) Added to the end of the original: "Beef was relatively expensive in Taiwan, up to the time I left it in 1984. Taiwanese ate it only in special occasions, or going to restaurants. Reasons: Taiwan had few cattle, and most beef was imported. It is still the case, but whether beef is affordable there at present, I do not know.
