这里涉及的陆兴华及其惊心动魄的话语，与他历次在涉及与汪晖有关的风波中不断重复的
网络话语，其实是一脉相承的。他除了以批判汪晖为专业外（所谓“天敌”），还批判过
上海的其他学者如许纪霖和吴冠军是“错乱”和抄袭。这里，不难发现，陆兴华与网民
vi
vo在性质上具有极高的相似度，都具有网络流氓知识分子的特征。
Liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life, because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.
三相比较，很容易看出两段中译第一句是几乎一样的。后面则有很大的不同。这主要是因为朱译改动、增删了很多内容而未注明，这点本身就是严重违反学术规范的。还有“因为自由孕育党争，所以它是政治生活的必需品”这句话是一个明显的错误翻译。不过这个错误反而表明，朱学勤是多少参照过英文本的，因为这是对“which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction”这两句断章取义的翻译，建立了一个错误的因果关系。如果没有读过英文是不可能犯这样的错误的。所以仅仅从这段还看不出来朱学勤是否参照过中译本。只能看出其英文欠佳。
但是下一段问题就来了：第357页，“党争潜在的因素……已经深植于人的本性之中”。
程译是：“党争的潜在原因，就这样深植于人性之中。”
英文原文是：The latent causes of faction are thus sown in the nature of man。
In all very numerous assemblies, of whatever character composed, passion never fails to wrest the sceptre from reason. Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob.
这里两个中译字句上的相似是无出其右的，仅第一句有些实质区别，还是朱学勤胡乱改错了的。至于“感情必定会夺取理智的至高权威”，是对“passion never fails to wrest the sceptre from reason”的灵活翻译，直译应该是“情感从理性那里夺走权杖的尝试从未失败”，朱译与之巧合的可能极低。最明显的是最后一句，“Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob”，这里语法上有一个让步结构：即使（had）雅典公民人人都是苏格拉底，每次集会也仍然（would still）是乌合之众。程译未能翻出，照抄其译文的朱学勤也沿袭其误，导致语义上的不通，让步关系变成了因果关系。
“阳光与闪电”一文，据朱学勤本人在后记中交代：“原为《阳光与闪电——美国革命与法国革命启示录》一书中译本序言”（369），该书原名《姊妹革命：法国之电与美国之光》（Sister Revolution: French Lightning, American Light）, 是美国学者Susan Dunn所著。由杨小刚译成中文，2003年二月出版，题目和朱学勤说的也不一样，叫做《姊妹革命：美国革命与法国革命启示录》。不知道什么原因，该译著没有收录朱的序言。朱学勤就放在了《道德理想国的覆灭》中作为一篇独立的文章。的确，朱学勤在文章开头部分提到了此书，并说“作者征引那一时代人们的大量通信，日记和私下谈话，描绘了另一幅有可能令中国读者感到陌生甚或意外的图画。”（338）但是此外，再无提过该书或该作者，没有任何地方坦承这是Dunn的观点，也从来没有在脚注中引用过。因此，读者有充分理由认为，朱学勤可能只是从该书中受到启发，而文中的资料和观点都是朱本人的。
但事实上，据我花了半个多小时的粗略查证，朱文中几乎所有广征博引的，看起来吓人的大部头英法文资料，什么《汉密尔顿文集》（The Papers of Alexander Hamilton）、《圣鞠斯特全集》（Saint-Just， Oeuvres Completes）、《亚当斯与杰斐逊通信集》（The Adams-Jefferson Letters）都来自于Dunn的原书，几乎所有引文都是从Dunn书中拷贝的。但是朱学勤只给出原始出处，从来没费神提到Dunn的英文著作或者其中译本的一言半语。这样就给人一种极其错误的，朱学勤本人学识广博的印象。

法国革命在建立宪制方面的困难，首先表现为革命期间宪法更迭的频繁。从1789年大革命开始，到1814年波旁王朝复辟，短短的十五年间，法国竟先后有过五部宪法：即1791年宪法、1793年宪法、1795年宪法、1799年宪法和1804年宪法(后两个属拿破仑时代的宪法，大同小异)。这种制宪的困难甚至在大革命之后还在长期地折磨着法国人，在那片土地上还将接二连三地生长出1814年路易十八宪章、1830年路易·菲力普宪章、1848年第二共和国宪法、1852年拿破仑三世宪法、1875年第三共和国宪法、1946年第四共和国宪法，以及现在还在实行的1958年第五共和国宪法。这一情况，同美国革命创造的1787年联邦宪法二百多年来的一以贯之(尽管陆续附加了一系列修正案)，形成了惊人的对照。【P52】

这一节将通过对朱学勤先生赖以成名的博士论文《道德理想国的覆灭》与美国学者Carol Blum的著作《卢梭与德性共和国》 （Rousseau and the Republic of Virtue）（Ithaca & London： Cornell University Press，1986）部分内容的对勘，指出其在未经注明的情况下，大量或明或暗，或隐或显地抄袭、盗用后者的事实。
In his celebrated letter to Voltaire, he put forth his objections to the anti-Providentialism of the “Poeme sur le desastre de Lisbonne”. “It is inhuman to trouble peaceful souls, and to distress men to no purpose, when what one is teaching them is neither certain nor useful.”（4：1075）
这句话的法文原文为：“[I]l y a de l’inhumanité à troubler des ames paisibles & à désoler les hommes à pure perte, quand ce qu’on veut leur apprendre n’est ni certain ni utile.”
英法文合参，再清楚不过，朱书的译文只可能是从英文转译的。因为“使得人们无目标而烦恼痛苦”实际上是一个错误的翻译，而这个错误就基于“to distress men to no purpose”的英文译文，朱学勤对“to no purpose”的理解是错误的，将“毫无目的地折磨人”当成了“使得人们无目标”。而如果朱学勤真的看过法文的话，对“à pure perte”（白白地，徒然）无论怎么理解，也不可能翻出“无目标”来。
“Do you wish the general will to be accomplished? Make all the private wills connect to it; and since virtue is nothing but the conformity of the private will to the general, to say the same thing in a word, make virtue reign. (3:252)
He（狄德罗）had replaced a morality of intention and sensibility with one based solely on socially useful action : “It is not the thoughts, it is the acts which distinguish the good man from the wicked one. The secret story of all souls is about the same.”[2]

事实上，朱书在此不仅是将转引变成了直接引用并掩饰了引文实际出处，他还窃取了Blum自己的研究成果，放到自己的论述里：在同一页上，Blum有一个脚注说，她曾在另一本书中研究过德性问题。结论是“Diderot gradually substituted a morality of socially useful action for one based on subjective sensations of goodness; a system of value which both men had shared in their youth and to which Rousseau remained faithful.”这显然是朱学勤“狄德罗青年时代与卢梭一度有过共识……”一段话的依据，但对此没有丝毫说明。
In his youth, some 25 years before, when he was living as the protégé of Mme de Warrens, his masturbation had been so obvious that she, alarmed at his habits, took him to her bad. He reacted to this change in their relationship “with an invincible sadness which poisoned the charm”(1:197). His autobiographical writings place the origins of the problem of whether it was better to masturbate or to enter into a real affair with a woman during those years. It was at this time, probably around 1729, while he was living at the home of Mme de Warrens, that Rousseau wrote his first play: Narcisse.
我在另一个帖子里说：
前些时（出于对林国荣的纯粹好奇）我也随检过刘小枫编的Strauss文集《苏格拉底问题与现代性》。其中的一篇林译就有类似的问题，表面文从字顺，其实对照原文一看，满不是那么回事。
刚才检视一下，发现说错了。收录林国荣副教授译文的并非《苏格拉底问题与现代性》这部论文集，而是Meier的专著《古今之争中的核心问题：施米特的学说与施特劳斯的论题》。这本书收录在刘小枫教授任主编的"西方传统经典与解释"丛书中，版本信息是：迈尔著，林国基等译《古今之争中的核心问题：施米特的学说与施特劳斯的论题》，北京，华夏出版社，2004。其中页247开始，是林国荣译的Leo Strauss文章“The Mutual Influence of Theology and Philosophy”。在此特为以上错误致歉。
乍一看，这个译文读起来也很顺口，没有太大问题。但拿着原文稍微推敲一下儿，短短的第一段，就有不少有疑问的地方。
原文第一段：
When we attempt to return to the roots of Western civilization, we observe soon that Western civilization has two roots which are in conflict with each other, the biblical and the Greek philosophic, and this is to begin with a very disconcerting observation. Yet this realization has also something reassuring and comforting. The very life of Western civilization is the life between two codes, a fundamental tension. There is therefore no reason inherent in the Western civilization itself, in its fundamental constitution, why it should give up life. But this comforting thought is justified only if we live that life, if we live that conflict, that is. No one can be both a philosopher and a theologian or, for that matter, a third which is beyond the conflict between philosophy und theology, or a synthesis of both. But every one of us can be and ought to be either the one or the other, the philosopher open to the challenge of theology or the theologian open to the challenge of philosophy.
But this comforting thought is justified only if we live that life, if we live that conflict, that is.
这里"that is"，是指"if we live that conflict"与"if we live that life"同义，林却翻到后面一句去了，成了“也就是说，没有人可以同时集哲学家和神学家于一身...”，逻辑关系根本错了。
No one can be both a philosopher and a theologian or, for that matter, a third which is beyond the conflict between philosophy and theology, or a synthesis of both.
是一口气下来的句子：我们1）不能同时是哲学家和神学家；2）也不能成为超乎二者的第三方；3）也不能成为二者的综合。这个三重否定的逻辑关系像三个线头，林抓住了第一个，2）和3）没抓紧，几乎跑掉了。
But every one of us can be and ought to he either the one or the other, the philosopher open to the challenge of theology or the theologian open to the challenge of philosophy.
是说我们要么做哲学家，要么做神学家，the one or the other跟"the philosophy"和"the theologian"是同位语，林译失去了这一层联系，意思没有交代清楚。

Dear President Gu Binglin and President Xie Weihe:
We write you as an international community of scholars, translators, editors
, historians and cultural critics in support of Professor Wang Hui who is
currently under attack from the popular media in China. This recent,
baffling, organized media attack could happen to any scholar and for that
reason we, the undersigned, present this letter.
First, Professor Wang has been accused of plagiarism. The charges have been
contested and discredited in the careful analyses given by Zhong Biao, Shu
Wei, Wei Xing and others. Among the signatories to this letter are also
translators and they are without doubt closest to the work of Wang Hui.
Each translator has checked and double checked all the footnotes in the vast
bibliographies of Professor Wang's publications over the last thirty years.
None has found any indication of plagiarism no matter how loosely this
word is defined.
Second, among us are many Asia specialists in Chinese studies and we attest
to Professor Wang's scholarly integrity and his importance in international
Asian studies. The first Chinese scholar of Asia ever invited to address
the Association of Asian Studies annual convention in spring 2010, Wang was
honored for the breadth, depth and reliability of his scholarship and for
the significance of the topics he has popularized among scholars and the
many admirers and principled critics his work has attracted. This is
recognition at the highest level possible among our community of scholarship
. Wang Hui has influenced scholars in China and outside the country,
speaking simultaneously to both constituencies and opening a bridge among us.
Third, media attacks on the universities during times of extreme social and
economic transition are common. Many of us have witnessed media attacks and
what they share is contempt for research and incomprehension of how
university scholarship enriches everyday life, to say nothing of scientific,
social scientific, humanistic and artistic social life. The university as
an institution is weakened when unmotivated attacks from the media culture
single out one scholar as a target: the next logical step is to attack the
university itself.
Finally, when ordinary cultural politics inside the university are
criminalized, the legitimacy of scholarship, higher education, experimental
arts and human sciences is imperiled as well. The universities are
effectively cancelled as central institutions of social development.
We, the undersigned are familiar with the known facts in this case and have
read, taught, commented on the work of Professor Wang Hui critically and in
a friendly fashion, or translated him.
