(A) However this is an misnomer, because in Taiwan, there are few American style primary, which became popular in US after 1968, the year Democrats nominated Hubert Humphrey (vice president 1965-1969) for president.
(B) "Many people saw Humphrey as Johnson's stand-in [because Humphrey 'supported President Johnson's Vietnam initiative'] * * * [Because Johnson withdrew  from the race on Mar 31, 1968] Humphrey entered the race too late to participate in the Democratic primaries and concentrated on winning delegates in non-primary states by gaining the support from democratic officeholders who were elected delegates for the Democratic Convention. * * * [still] Humphrey was the front runner as he led the delegate count."  Wikipedia. Backed by labor unions and party establishment, Humphrey won nomination for president in 1968 Democratic National Convention (Aug 26-29, 1968). But anti-war protesters in Chicago in particularly marred his campaign.
(C) Both major political parties in Taiwan have used 民调 in lieu of 初选--something Americans will feel very odd. You see, elections (and primaries especially, where turnouts are traditionally very low) relies on a candidate's organization capability to motivate supporters to vote.
(iii) This 初选民调--THIS TIME open to the general public (by telephone without regard to age, though in Taiwan a voter has to be more than 20 years old--is the so called 防磚 (read: sieve out the trash) to obtain 玉, It is conceivable that DPP tactically supporters voices approval in the polls (this happens, too, to primaries in US that are opens to all registered voters regardless of their party registration). This phenomenon may explain "洪秀柱最近几个月的民众支持率迅速追赶民主进步党主席蔡英文."

(b) "她 [洪秀柱] 又向不支持她的人发出呼吁：'再给我一点时间，再给我一些机会，希望你们能够听听我在说什么，我也会谦卑地聆听大家的声音。'  她表示反对她的人是因为 '不了解”她和国民党的真正用意，希望借此机会改变反对者的看法。' "
