In Note(b)(i) of my posting today (titled "美决策者认识中国难"), there is "anaconda in the chandelier."

(A) Perry Link, China: The Anaconda in the Chandelier. The New York Review of Books, Apr 11, 2002

This essay is where the term came from. Unfortunately, most of the essay is locked behind paywall. The New York Review of Book

is not the same as book review published every Sunday by New York Times.

(B) A summary of “anaconda in the chandelier”

Frank Langfitt, Western Media In China: Adjusting To The 'Anaconda.'  NPR, Nov 11, 2013.

five consecutive paragraphs:

"Perry Link, a well-regarded China scholar at the University of California, Riverside, described it best in a 2002 essay for the New York Review of Books.

" 'The Chinese government's censorial authority in recent times has resembled not so much a man-eating tiger or fire-snorting dragon as a giant anaconda coiled in an overhead chandelier,' Link wrote.

"Link said the anaconda didn't have to set limits, or even move — its mere presence was enough to make people limit their own behavior.

" 'Everyone in its shadow makes his or her large and small adjustments — all quite "naturally," ' Link wrote.

"Sometimes, the anaconda strikes.
