Andrew Browne, The End of ‘One China;’  After a historic surprise meeting with the leader of Taiwan, Xi Jinping could go down in history for recognizing the island democracy -- or choose conflict instead. Wall Street Journal, Nov 14, 2015.

(a) Excerpts in the windows of print:

“Taiwan’s likely next president won’t utter the old ‘One China’ mantra, and Xi knows it.

“The people of Taiwan ‘have no desire to unify with China -- ever.’

(b) Quote:

"The Kuomintang is in disarray, and the likely victor in presidential elections in January, Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party, can’t bring herself to utter the 'One China' mantra. * * * Ms Tsai, who Mr Xi knows is unlikely ever to accept 'One China' * * * By agreeing to engage with Taiwanese leaders [Ma at least] without the principle of 'One China,' Mr Xi * * * If Ms Tsai refuses to embrace 'One China,' it is hard to see any future Kuomintang leader doing so either. That is because the overwhelming majority of voters in Taiwan are content with the status quo

"Ma clearly hankered after his handshake with Mr Xi  * * * The real conundrum is why Mr Xi bothered with him [Ma].

(c) My comment:
(i) It has been a week, since the publication of this essay. So far, no translation yet in cn.wsj.com.
(ii) By “the end of one China,” the WSJ reporter stationing in China (Andrew browne) means Ms Tsai Ing-wen is unlikely to mouth “One China,” ending the practice of Taiwan’s heads since 1949.
(iii) "Charles Huang 黃育徵, a prominent Taiwan businessman and one of Ms Tsai’s closest advisers"
(iv) "The so-called Xi’an incident altered Asia’s destiny: The Kuomintang’s armies fought most of the big battles against the Japanese, pinning down more than a million enemy troops who might otherwise have been deployed elsewhere, and hastening the end of the Pacific War. Meanwhile, the Communists husbanded their forces to be ready to renew the civil war."
