Letter to editor: Kevin Hoover, Scots Are More Studious. Economist, Feb 3, 2018
("England gained its third university in 1829. By this time, however, there were already four universities in much less populous Scotland: St Andrews (1410), Glasgow (1451), Aberdeen (1495) and Edinburgh(1582). Ireland, then a part of the United Kingdom, had Trinity College (1592)" )

My comment:
(a) There is no need to read the rest.
(b) Third-oldest university in England debate
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th ... y_in_England_debate
("King's College London [presently a  constituent college of the federal University of London], officially claims to be the fourth oldest university in England but is claimed by some students to be the third oldest as the third university institution to receive a Royal Charter (1829)")

(c)
(i) "The town [of St Andrews] is home to the University of St Andrews [founded by Augustinian clergy], the third oldest university in the English-speaking world * * * The name St Andrews derives from the town's claim to be the resting place of bones of the apostle Andrew. According to legend, St Regulus (or Rule) brought the relics to Kilrymont, where a shrine was established for their safekeeping and veneration"
(ii) Andrew the Apostle
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_the_Apostle
(Greek: Andreas; no Hebrew or Aramaic name is recorded for him; section 1 Life)

(d) "University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 by a charter or papal bull from Pope Nicholas V, at the suggestion of King James II" of Scotland.
(e) University of Aberdeen was founded "when William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen, petitioned Pope Alexander VI on behalf of James IV, King of Scots"
(f)
(i) University of Edinburgh was "founded by the Edinburgh Town Council."
(ii) Scotland: capital is Edinburgh and largest city Glasgow. In the 2011 UK census, the population for Edinburgh (477k), Glasgow (593k), and Scotland (5.3m).
(g) Trinity College, Dublin was founded "by Queen Elizabeth I * * * The first Provost of the College was the Archbishop of Dublin, Adam Loftus (after whose former college at Cambridge the institution was named)."
(h) universities mentioned above are currently public. The source of the above information is en.wikipedia.org, including quotations. If you search Google Maps with (St Andrew), you will see its location relative to Dundee and the other three Scottish cities mentioned above.
