(2) Tim Loh, Lights Out at Three Mile Island.

Quote:

"Sept 30[, 2019], which is around when Exelon Corp[, owner of the nuclear plant,] plans to take Three Mile Island offline

"For the cluster of small towns stretching along the Susquehanna River and south of Harrisburg, the closure of Three Mile Island will be a powerful blow. Last year alone, the plant sent $1.5 million in taxes and other payments to surrounding Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, and the local school district. And while the nuclear plant may not be the area's biggest employer—that title goes to various entities with 'Hershey' in their names, from a medical center to the amusement park just up the road—its 675 workers make good money. The average salary is $89,000, according to Exelon. That's helped boost the median household income of Londonderry Township (population 5,242) to nearly $63,000, according to US census data—higher than the statewide median of $55,000.  Through its 44-year existence, Three Mile Island has been a powerful draw for generations of highly skilled engineers, mechanics, and others who've often come up through the ranks of the U.S. Navy or top-flight universities.

"Three Mile Island began operating in 1974, a time of unbridled ambition for nuclear power. The Arab oil embargo had exposed America's dangerous dependence on foreign energy, sparking a drive for independence.

"Like it or not, the US remains the world's nuclear energy leader, home to almost a quarter of the planet’s roughly 400 gigawatts of generating capacity, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"Illinois [is] the state that leads the US in nuclear power generation

Note:
(a)
(i) summary underneath the title in print: Cheap gas threatens to do what antinuclear activists couldn't, which is put the infamous power plant out of business
(ii) Print and the online version are identical -- text and graphics (but the online one has more photos).

(b) Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station is on an island called Three Mile Island. The island "is so named because it is located three miles downriver [Susquehanna River] from Middletown, Pennsylvania."  About 10-mile air distance southeast of capital Harrisburg, the island is within Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania. You may use Google maps to look for the township and view its satellite photo of the island. The accident happened at reactor 2 at 4:37 am, EST (Eastern Standard Time), Mar 28, 1979. "[T]he accident did not raise radioactivity far enough above background levels to cause even one additional cancer death among the people in the area * * * The EPA found no contamination in water, soil, sediment or plant samples."  en.wikipedia.org.

(c) "the nuclear plant may not be the area's biggest employer—that title goes to various entities with 'Hershey' in their names, from a medical center to the amusement park just up the road" in Hershey, Penn
(i) Hershey, Pennsylvania
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hershey,_Pennsylvania
(Hershey's chocolates are made in Hershey; is located 14 miles (23 km) east of Harrisburg)

View map. Three Mile Island, Hershey, and Harrisburg are all in the same county.
(ii) "In 1963, the MS Hershey Foundation offered $50 million to the Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania. With this grant and $21.3 million from the US Public Health Service * * * Ground was broken in 1966 and Penn State's College of Medicine opened its doors to the first class of students in 1967. Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center accepted its first patients in 1970." Wikipedia.

Please take notice the donation was made to Penn State (1855- ; flagship campus is University Park: "chosen because it is near the geographic center of the state": Wikipedia for the university. University Park is about 60-mile air distance northwest of Harrisburg. Pennsylvania has quite a few four-year public universities. Besides, there are 7 schools of medicine in Pennsylvania offering MD programs; the other six are: Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (established in 2008; based in Scranton, Pennsylvania); University of Pittsburgh, Temple University (Philadelphia), UPenn (ditto), Thomas Jefferson University (ditto), and Drexel University (ditto). The first three (Geisinger, Pittsburgh and Temple) are public, plus Penn State. Geisinger is the last name of benefactor.
