(1) Indo-Pacific Strategy Report. US Department of Defense, June 1, 2019.

Quote:
page 30 in a sidebar headlined "Strengthening Partnerships" that is not found in table of contents: "As democracies in the Indo-Pacific, Singapore, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Mongolia are reliable, capable, and natural partners of the United States. All four countries contribute to US missions around the world and are actively taking steps to uphold a free and open international order. The strength of these relationships is what we hope to replicate in our new and burgeoning relationships in the Indo-Pacific. [Each of the four is discussed separately.]
"TAIWAN[:] The United States has a vital interest in upholding the rules-based international order, which includes a strong, prosperous, and democratic Taiwan. The United States is pursuing a strong partnership withTaiwan and will faithfully implement the Taiwan Relations Act [without customary simultaneous mention of three communiques], as part of a broader commitment to the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific. Our partnership is vital given China's continued pressure campaign against Taiwan. * * * " page 31.

(a) Alex Lockie, The US Just Quietly Challenged China on Something Beijing Promised to Go to War over. Manhattan: Business Insider, June 7, 2019
https://www.businessinsider.com/ ... chinas-anger-2019-6
two consecutive paragraphs:
"The US military's recent Indo-Pacific Strategy paper, published on June 1, goes further than perhaps any US document ever issued in potentially provoking China's rage over what it sees as the most sensitive issue.
"Buried in the paper, which charts China's efforts to build up a military fortress in the South China Sea and use its growing naval might to coerce its neighbors, is a reference to Taiwan as a "country."

partial transcript (the first several paragraphs): "Amid growing tension between the US and China on the economic front,... the US, for the first time has officially recognized Taiwan as a sovereign country.
While its first agreement with Beijing forbids them to do so,... Washington's move is seen as a deliberate one.
Lee Ji-won has more.
In the Defense Department's first Indo-Pacific strategy report, the US has called Taiwan a sovereign state.
Released earlier this month, the report says the Defense Department has taken steps to expand its partnerships with 4 countries, including Taiwan.
It then said that the democracies in these **countries** are reliable and that they help actively to uphold a free and open international order.
It's the first time the US has called Taiwan a country in such an official document. " (The two pairs of asterisks are original.)

In the right column, about three-forths down the Web page is an image showing cadets of US Air Force Academy around President Trump. This image itself shows no flag. By clicking the image, the photo (a bit larger than the image) shows flags on the left margin, including that of Republic of China (Taiwan).
