Imperial Regalia of Japan
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Regalia_of_Japan
)"mid the speeches, customary robes and ancient rituals of the enthronement of Japan's new emperor Naruhito [today (Tuesday)] * * * The boxes will be placed next to the emperor as he ascends the Chrysanthemum Throne 皇位 on Tuesday. They are believed to contain a sword and ancient jewel that, according to legend, date back to the mythical forefather of Japan's first emperor, Jimmu 神武 [天皇, whose "accession is traditionally dated as 660 BC": en.wikipedia.org], who ruled almost 2,700 years ago. Along with a fabled octagonal mirror (which plays no part Tuesday's ceremony), they form Japan's royal regalia, or the Three Sacred Treasures.  In the absence of a crown, these items serve as the symbolic embodiment of the emperor's -- now largely ceremonial -- role. Yet, their condition and appearance remain shrouded in mystery * * * it's believed that the sword and mirror are kept at shrines in Nagoya [熱田神宮, at 愛知県名古屋市熱田区] and Ise [伊勢神宮 at ], respectively. The jewel is thought to be stored at the palace in Tokyo [皇居の「剣璽の間」; '天皇の寝室の隣': ja.wikipedia.org for '剣璽' under section 1 剣璽の間], where [the palace, not bedroom] Tuesday's ceremony is set to take place")
