Emil Filtenborg and Stefan Weichert, Attack Drones Dominating Tanks as Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict Showcases the Future of War. Daily Beast, Oct 26, 2020.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/at ... s-the-future-of-war

Quote:

(a) "TEPANAKERT, Nagorno-Karabakh—Stretched on a gurney, a soldier lies wrapped in gauze. Fifty percent of his body is burned, even inside his throat and lungs [because the soldier had inhaled heated air], says one of the paramedics in the back of the ambulance * * *

"Reporters have been kept away from soldiers and the direct impact of the war in recent days, but plans scrambled by the reinvigorated shelling of Stepanakert lead to The Daily Beast suddenly finding ourselves in the back of this ambulance, being given an accidental glimpse at the human consequences of the war.

"Kamikaze drones purchased from Israel have been used to devastating effect by Azerbaijan. These small craft also known as loitering munitions are able to surveil targets including tanks, artillery installations or troops before blowing themselves up. Larger Turkish drones are also flying high above the disputed region and launching missile strikes.

"While the soldier in the ambulance has been unable to tell medics how he was so badly wounded, his head injuries and extensive burns are consistent with what they have seen with drone strikes, one doctor at the hospital in Stepanakert told The Daily Beast.

(b) "The war in Nagorno-Karabakh, which was almost entirely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, broke out on Sept. 27. Artsakh is a small mountainous pocket in the Caucasus which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but has been claiming independence for almost 30 years. The population is almost entirely ethnic Armenian and the breakaway state is supported by Armenia. The republic declared independence after the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which lasted from the late 1980s to 1994, claiming 30,000 lives.

(c) "there are several reports about the huge loss of military hardware such as tanks on both sides * * *

(d) "Nagorno-Karabakh is located next to regional superpowers such as Turkey, which support Azerbaijan militarily and politically in the conflict. At the same time, Russia has a defensive pact with Armenia, making the situation tense. The Republic of Artsakh is also located next to Iran, a major player in the region.

Note:
(a) There is no need to read the rest.

(b)
(i) Emil (given name)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_(given_name)
("The name Emil, Emile or Émile is a male given name, deriving from the Latin Aemilius of the gens Aemilia. The female given name is Emily."/ section 1 Translation: "Emilio" in Italian, Portuguese and Spanish)
(A) In English, Emil may have the accent (emphasis) placed on the first or second syllable.
(B) Regarding the etymology of Aemilius. Wiktionary.com says, "Possibly from aemulus ('rival')" whereas Collinsdictionary.com, "Ger [Emil] < Fr Émile < L Aemilius, name of a Roman gens < L aemulus: see emulate)
(C) Aemilius is the Roman family name or surname -- "nomen" in Roman culture. See Roman naming conventions
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_naming_conventions
("The distinguishing feature of Roman nomenclature was the use of both personal names and regular surnames. Throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, other ancient civilizations distinguished individuals through the use of single personal names, usually dithematic [meaning: two themes] in nature. Consisting of two distinct elements, or 'themes,' these names allowed for hundreds or even thousands of possible combinations. But a markedly different system of nomenclature arose in Italy, where the personal name [praenomen] was joined by a hereditary surname [nomen]. Over time, this binomial system expanded to include additional names and designations [cognomen]")
(ii) Latin-English dictionary:
* aemulus (adjective masculine; from Proto-Italic [adjective] *aimolos [striving to equal or excel, rivaling], from [noun masculine] *aimos imitation): "striving to equal or excel, rivaling"
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/aemulus
* nōmen (noun neuter): "name"
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/nomen

The Latin word nōmen gave rise to English noun "noun." Meanwhile, the English noun "name" is from Old English (of Anglo-Saxons) nama; cognates of "name" include Latin "nōmen" and Modern Spanish noun masculine "nombre."  Wiktionary for "name."
* gens (noun feminine): "Roman clan, related by birth or marriage and sharing a common name [nomen]"
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gens
(iii) Stefan is an English variant of Stephen
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen
("The name 'Stephen' (and its common variant 'Steven') is derived [via Latin Stephanus] from Greek Stéphanos, a first name from the [Ancient] Greek word [noun masculine] στέφανος (stéphanos), meaning 'wreath, crown' ")

(c) Launched in 2008, Daily Beast is based in Manhattan.

(d) Nagorno-Karabakh
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh
(view map; "is * * * a region * * * governed by the Republic of Artsakh)
is an enclave.
(e) The En.wikipedia.org has a page for loitering munition, but there is no need to read it.

(f) Kamikaze is not the name of the drone; instead it describes a function of the drone. The name of the drone is Hero-120 of UVision Air Ltd -- founded in 2001, based in Zur Igal and reported 42 employees (there is no en.wikipedia.org for the company).
(i) Zur Igal is also spelled Tzur Yigal. It is located about 15 air-miles northeast of Tel Aviv, near the border with Palestine.
(ii) All products (drones) of UVision are Hero, followed by a different number -- some of which specialize in following radar waves to destroy the radar. My impression is that loitering munitions are similar to missiles (such as hellfire missile that American military drones fireto destroy target. But drones are much cheaper than a hellfire missile. Both military drones and loitering munitions are operated remotely by humans.

There is no good video in Youtube.com ot the Web. But once you reach UVision website.
https://uvisionuav.com/
an official video is played in a loop, which is informative.

Then click a tab ("TECHNOLOGY") in the top horizontal bar of home page:
"Suitable for deployment from air, land and sea, HERO features high-speed transit flight [to target] and low-speed loitering [for surveillance, until a target is located], depending on the tactical or strategic needs of the mission. Automated [or pilotless] flight to target areas allow user-friendly control; final targets are visually selected ensuring full mission control."

The website does not say whether the drone may operate at night or in inclement weather.

In the PRODUCTS at the top horizontal bar of the UVision home page is Hero-120
https://uvisionuav.com/portfolio-view/hero-120/
("Hero-120 is the largest of the short-range systems"/ table: Weight (kg): 12.5[,] Warhead (kg): 4.5[,] Range (LOS [Line Of Sight]): 40 km[,] Endurance (min): 60[,] Engine: Electrical[,] Launch method: Canister)
, whose length is 1.5 meters.
