Now Vietnam 狐假虎威.

"On Sunday [Aug. 8], the U.S. Navy hosted a delegation of Vietnamese
military and government officials on the USS George Washington, a hulking
nuclear-powered aircraft supercarrier cruising in waters off Vietnam's
central coast. Chinese military ships were seen shadowing the carrier in the
distance.

"'These waters belong to nobody, yet belong to everybody,' Capt. David
Lausman, commanding officer of the George Washington, said Sunday aboard the
mammoth carrier * * * 'China has a right to operate here, as do we and as
do every other country of the world.'

My comment: Mr. Bolton, former ambassador to UN under president George W.
Bush, is friendly with Taiwan. Still there is no need to read the article,
for there is nothing new. I list it here due to where it is published.

major upgrade of its missile base near the city of Delingha in Qinghai
province, next to Tibet. In addition to the intermediate-range missiles
already stationed in the region, Rajagopalan says there are indications the
Chinese may have beefed up the force with long-range DF-31s and DF-31As --
thus threatening not only northern India, including Delhi, but targets in
the south as well. It's entirely possible, she acknowledges in a 2007 paper,
that the Chinese move could be aimed primarily at countering Russian
missiles stationed in Siberia, but warns that * * *")

I think China painted itself into a corner. Neither China nor US can back
down on this issue. I assume China, after exploring for gas and oil for
decades at South China Sea, must find a bonanza. If China backs down, all
its exploration of natural resources will be for naught--they will go to
separate nations such as Vietnam, in whose EEZ it (Vietnam) claims the
resources are. Then there is the national prestige--or "face" in Chinese.

However, in case China does not back down, it may lose even more.

There is this article, written from geopolitical viewpoint (otherwise, it is
not worth reading):
Geoff Dyer, Power Play in the South China Sea. Financial Times, Aug. 10,
2010.

I was more impressed by the front-page announcement of the same newspaperthe
day before of this impending article, which read:

"Challenging China's Dominance

"From the Cheonan incident to the South China Sea islands dispute, the US is
now making a point of standing up to China. It's a foretaste of the next
decade, as China and the US vie for dominance in Asia.
