("8月10日,中国首艘航母进行出海航行试验。官方新华社在报道中只用了“航母平台”加以称呼。中央电视台的报道说,根据海军惯例,军舰在正式服役以后才会有真正的命名")

Quote:
(a) "正式服役" in humans and military ships is the same in English: commissioned.

(of Admiral Kuznetsov class; known as Riga when her keel was laid down at Shipyard 444 (now Nikolayev South) in Nikolayev[, Ukraine] December 6, 1985; launched December 4, 1988, but she was renamed Varyag (Varangian) in late 1990, after the famous Russian cruiser [which Russians scuttled on Feb 9, 1904 to avoid capture in now Inchon harbor during Russo-Japanese War]

My comment:
(a) The date "2011年 7月 15日" is obviously wrong: I did not see it before and the date in the URL "20110812" is correct.
(b) One need not see the video clips (I did not). Bu5t the subtitle "中国是否在遏制美国的亚洲影响力?" is new to me. Whether it relfects new fear or a pretext by Americans, it is unclear.

Quote:

"My friends in the U.S. Navy aren't as worried. China's investment in aircraft carriers will be a waste of money, they say, because a Chinese carrier will be highly vulnerable to American nuclear attack submarines during a time of war. But that doesn't reassure the Japanese. Since the Japanese navy does not field nuclear attack submarines, a Chinese carrier could pose a serious threat to Japanese territorial integrity.

"Another operational gain for China is in anti-air warfare. This has been one of the historical disadvantages of the Chinese Navy—they haven't been successful at checking or interdicting enemy aircraft. Possessing an aircraft carrier will allow it to overcome that handicap by using carrier-borne fighters to intercept the enemy.

Two consecutive paragraphs:

"It is also clear that China has not skimped on propulsion. Thick exhaust from the funnel during engine tests indicates that Varyag is not fitted with the gas turbines that Western and Japanese navies now routinely use for fast ships—and yet the exhaust color is too light for diesel propulsion, a heavy but inexpensive and efficient choice commonly made for ships of moderate speed. Diesels were an alternative that Chinese builders, expert in merchant ship construction, could easily have executed had the navy not wanted much speed, says U.S. Naval War College Prof. Andrew Erickson.

"So the installation—reportedly built with Ukrainian help—is evidently a powerful steam-turbine plant, matched to the high-speed lines of the hull. Varyag’s sister ship, the Russian Kuznetsov, has a 147,000-kw (197,000-hp) steam-turbine plant that propels the ship at about 30 kt., compared with the 25-plus kt. officially stated for the two otherwise comparable ships that Britain is building. U.S. carriers are capable of more than 30 kt.
