(1) The economics of good looks  |  The Line of Beauty; Pretty people still get the best deals in the market, from labour to love. Economist, Aug 27, 2011
http://www.economist.com/node/21526782
(book review on three books)

Quote:

"In the labour market as a whole (though not, for example, in astrophysics), looks have a bigger impact on earnings than education, though intelligence—mercifully enough— is valued more highly still.

"Despite the fact that both sexes are more sexually active than ever before, from the age of about 30 women’s libido tends to fall off while men’s does not. Because women have less interest in sex than men, it is, to put it crudely, a seller’s market. In the power dynamic of couples, controlling access to sex is more important than earning more money, says Ms Hakim.

Note:
(a) plain (adj):
"6a : belonging to the masses : COMMON
b : lacking special distinction or affectation : ORDINARY
* * *
8: lacking beauty or ugliness"

All definitions are from www.m-w.com, except otheriwse noted.
(b) dishy (adj; First Known Use 1961): "ATTRACTIVE, GOOD-LOOKING"
(c) pulchritude (n; Latin pulchr-, pulcher beautiful): "physical comeliness"
(d) air hostess (n): "Gender-neutral form: flight attendant; a stewardess on an airliner"

(2) The author of one of the books reviewed above penned an op-ed.

Daniel S Hamermesh, Ugly? You May Have a Case; Should the unattractive be given legal protection, like racial minorities?  New York Times, Aug 28, 2011.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/28/opinion/sunday/ugly-you-may-have-a-case.html?scp=1&sq=hamermesh&st=cse
("While extensive research shows that women’s looks have bigger impacts in the market for mates, another large group of studies demonstrates that men’s looks have bigger impacts on the job")

My comment: Read only paragraphs 1, 2 and 6. In the rest, the author talked about enacting law to protect the unattractive.

(3) Snip and Tuck: Young Chinese Seek Perfection. Reuters, Aug 18, 2011
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/18/us-snip-tuck-young-chinese-seek-perfecti-idUSTRE77H4SX20110818
("China ranked second behind the United States in number of aesthetic surgical procedures performed according to a 2009 survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery")
