The anticipated arrival of a 3-D channel has spurred sales of 3-D-capable TV sets, but China's effort to eliminate 'vulgar' and 'immoral' influences has limited prime-time entertainment content. Quote:

"Chinese consumers are buying 3-D television sets in record numbers. But they may have nothing more exciting than cooking shows to watch. The Chinese government inaugurated the nation's first officially sanctioned 3-D TV channel last month, on the first day of the new Year of the Dragon. At the same time, however, the government's effort to eliminate TV's "vulgar" and "immoral" influences cut prime-time entertainment programming by 70%.

"Sales of 3-D-capable sets in China have been strong, spurred by * * * prices that have fallen in half over the last year * * * Of 44 million TV sets shipped last year, more than 5.5 million were 3-D. Only 174,000 3-D sets were shipped in 2010.

(2) David Sarno, Apple's iPhone Takes Big Bites Out of Wireless Carriers' Profits. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, which pay hefty subsidies on the iPhones their customers buy, have seen their earnings and stock prices drop since they began offering the Apple handsets.

Quote:

The iPhone "has left the carriers trapped in a kind of Faustian deal: The more iPhones they sell, the more money they lose.

"Wireless carriers began subsidizing the cost of cellphones years ago, in an era of simpler, less expensive 'feature' phones. Carriers might have offered a $300 phone to consumers for $100. But that doesn't work well with the much more expensive iPhone, which companies buy from Apple for about $600, analysts estimate, before reselling it to consumers for $200 — eating the $400 difference.

"A particularly sticky issue for carriers is that many iPhone users don't want to wait for their two-year contract to expire to buy the latest model, which has come out once a year. Generally the carriers have required consumers to pay the full price if they want a new iPhone before their contract runs out. But now, worried that subscribers will flee to competitors if they can't get a good price on the new phone, several carriers are offering 'early upgrade' deals to discount the newest iPhone before two years elapse. That means helping the consumer buy a second iPhone in one year — and handing over additional hundreds of dollars to Apple.

"'Can Apple continue to roll through industry after industry, soak up all the profits, and leave everything it touches as a smoking wreckage?' asked Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C Bernstein & Co. 'They've done it with music and handsets, and now they're doing it to the carriers.'

My comment:
(a) The report says carriers are conducting campaigns to entice buyers to look at Google Inc.-powered Android phones manufactured by Samsung Electronics, LG, HTC, Motorola and others. After heavy promotion, devices such as Motorola's Droid Razr and Samsung's Galaxy S 4G have begun to sell well.

See HTC falls through the crack. HTC had a poor 4Q11 and warned investors about sagging outlook of 1Q12. Subsequently its stock dropped. HTC attributes uts failure to Samsung smartphones and iPhones. But there is more to the story: in early January I was thing of buying an HTC tablet, but spooked by its acknowledgment that its tablet was not selling well (for unspecified reasons). HTC would release a detailed quarterlty report for 4Q11 in about 10 days. I will find out how many tablets it sold in that quarter.
