(1) Philip P Pan, Chen’s Final Escape? The last time he fled, he was severely punished. This time, the world is watching. New York Times, May 6, 2012 (op-ed).

("While en route in an embassy car, he [Chen Guangcheng] borrowed a cellphone and called The Washington Post, apparently in an attempt to reach me and explain his choice")

Note: The report provides a link to
Philip P Pan, Rural Activist Seized in Beijing. Washington Post, Sept 7, 2005.

(2) Wang Dan, Mr Chen, Welcome to America.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/0 ... s-final-escape.html
("WHEN I was younger I was arrested twice, and sentenced twice * * * I was also released twice, giving me two opportunities — once in 1993 and again in 1998 — to make a choice between leaving China or remaining. The first time, I chose to stay. The second time, I chose to leave for America. I have never regretted making that second choice. * * * * * The Internet and globalization have changed the very concept of exile")

My comment: The URL suggests the essay is published  today (May 6), which is however nowhere to be found in New York Times print. Further, the web version does not indicate where it is published (the Times, title and page number; or in International Herald Tribune). So I conclude the essay is published online only.
