(1) Lilian Lin, Custom Label: City May Put Names on Trash Bags. July 20, 2012
http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealti ... ames-on-trash-bags/
("Guangzhou is handing out garbage bags to residents that sports printed codes that correspond to their households. Local household have to pay 1 yuan ($0.156) each for extra bags if they use up their 60 free bags per month")

My comment: The report cites
Zheng Caixiong, Pilot Project Aims to Reduce Trash. Xinhua, July 6, 2012.
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90882/7868095.html
("Currently, every family in the city pays rubbish fees of 15 yuan ($2.40) a month. Under the new system, each family in the pilot housing estates will receive 60 special liners - 30 for kitchen waste and 30 for other garbage - each month")

It seems to me that sorting is into kitchen waste adn other garbage--no recyclables yet.

(2) Tom Orlik, Laurie Burkitt and Stefanie Qi, Q&A: Director Chen Kaige on the Future of Chinese Film. July 20, 2012.
http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealti ... re-of-chinese-film/

Quote:

"Zhang Yimou’s [金陵十三钗] 'Flowers of War,' released in the US in January, aimed to strike it big with US movie-goers, tapping A-list actor Christian Bale to star as the main character in the story of schoolgirls trapped in Nanjing during the Japanese occupation. Yet the film only brought in $311, 434 at box offices in North America, according to online box office reporting service Box Office Mojo.

"Look at Beijing—I grew up here, but now I come here and am a stranger. I don’t want to identify myself as someone who is from Beijing and to me it’s a shame, really a shame. They give you a new Beijing and let the old one die. I totally disagree with this, because the soul of the city is gone with the physical stuff. We pay very little attention to what we respect and what we loved in the past with our culture.

(4) Trinna Leong, Eight Questions: Gerard Lemos, ‘The End of the Chinese Dream.’ July 18, 2012
http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealti ... -the-chinese-dream/
(interview with author of the book: Gerard Lemos, The End of the Chinese Dream; Why Chinese people fear the future. Yale University Press, July 30, 2012)

Quote: "people need to feel more security and that could be achieved by giving everyone affordable health insurance and making sure there was free education for all children. A decent pension for poorer old people would be the third important reform."
