[<div class="EntryBody"> 我注意到Landsburg是因为Steven Pinker在How The Mind Works中讨论单偶制婚姻时引用了他的分析(见〈[<a target=_blank href="http://www.bullogger.com/blogs/whig/archives/290573.aspx">单偶制婚姻与欧佩克[</a>〉),我预感到,有兴致谈论此类问题的经济学家一定很有趣,况且他还能进入一位心理学家的视野,于是我搜到了这本书,也就是上述引文的出处。
“扶手椅经济学家”是以[<a target=_blank href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_von_Schmoller">Gustav von Schmoller[</a>为代表的德国历史学派经济学家,对斯密和李嘉图等英国古典经济学家及其德奥追随者的蔑称,意指他们在不掌握足够历史和现实经济数据的情况下,仅凭少数假设和原理进行分析和推断,并以此支持自己的经济政策(当时主要指自由放任和自由贸易)。
显然,Landsburg欣然接受“扶手椅经济学家”这个帽子并引以为荣,在这本书里,他完全按帽子所描述的方式行事:没有数据,没有真实的案例(尽管有大量经过简化的“问题”),也没有均衡等式和详尽的逻辑和数学推导(否则他只能算“书斋经济学家”而配不上“扶手椅经济学家”这称号了),按某些标准,称之为“扯淡经济学”也并不冤枉。
通过这本书,Landsburg唯一希望传达的是:经济学家如何思考,这种思考与其他人有何不同。这是该书的核心价值所在,也是我推荐它的唯一理由,至于他对书中每个问题作出的分析和给出的解答是否正确,倒在其次(我只同意其中60%左右)。
确实,获得经济学家的观察角度和思考方式很不容易,对某些人或许永无可能(这与智力没有关系),以我个人的经验,每次与人讨论社会和制度话题时,主要的障碍就是如何将对方引导到经济学角度上来,一旦做到这一点,常常会发现对方比我说的还要好,或者因为他比我掌握更多事实,或者他的逻辑能力比我更好,或者他更擅长运用语言,然而,这样的机会很少;我把推荐这本书作为此类努力的一种替代,呵呵。
如果你不打算系统学习经济学,但又对经济学家们喋喋不休的那些话题感兴趣,那就读读这本书吧,它至少可以让你较容易识别那些充斥舆论的胡言乱语和陈词滥调。

In November 1974, shortly after Iarrived at the University of Chicago to begin my graduate studies, theWall Street Journal published a list of "Ways to Stump an Economist."It was written by a man named John Tracy McGrath, who raised a seriesof embarrassingly simple questions about everyday life that he thoughteconomists would be unable to answer: Why does a pack of cigarettesbought from a cigarette machine cost more than a pack of cigarettesbought from the man at the candy store? Why can't racetracks makechange in less than 20-cent increments? Why does orange soda cost fourtimes as much as gasoline?[</p>[<p style="text-align: justify;">
That night over dinner, my friends andI—first-year graduate students all—had quite a laugh at McGrath'sexpense. With just a little knowledge of economics, all of hisquestions seemed easy.[</p>
[<p style="text-align: justify;">
Today, with nearly twenty years ofadditional knowledge, I think that all of McGrath's questions are bothfascinating and difficult. In my recollection, the answers that came soeasily over dinner consisted of nothing more than refusals to take thequestions seriously. I believe that we dismissed most of them with thephrase "supply and demand," as if that meant something. Whatever wethought it meant, we were sure that it was what economics was about.[</p>

Here is what I now think economics isabout. First, it is about observing the world with genuine curiosityand admitting that it is full of mysteries. Second, it is about tryingto solve those mysteries in ways that are consistent with the generalproposition that human behavior is usually designed to serve a purpose.Sometimes the mysteries themselves—like McGrath's—are hard to solve, sowe practice by trying to solve similar mysteries in fictional worldsthat we invent and call models. If the goal is to understand why orangesoda costs more than gasoline, we might begin by thinking about a worldwhere the only things that anybody ever buys are orange soda andgasoline. If the goal is to understand why particular constituencieswant to outlaw silicone breast implants, we might begin by thinkingabout a world where men choose their marriage partners exclusively onthe basis of breast size.[</p>

We think about models not because theyare realistic, but because thinking about models is a good warm-upexercise for thinking about the world we live in. The goal, always, isto understand our own world. The first step toward understanding—andthe step that we had not yet taken when we started graduate school—isto admit that the world is not always easy to understand.[</p>

This book is a compendium of essaysabout how economists think. It is about the things that we findmysterious, why we find them mysterious, and how we try to understandthem. It describes some mysteries that I think are solved and othersthat I think are not. There are a lot of good reasons to learn abouteconomics, but the reason I have tried to stress in this book is thateconomics is a tool for solving mysteries, and solving mysteries is fun.[</p>

These chapters give a sampling of howeconomists see the world. For the most part, they can be read in anyorder. Some chapters refer to ideas from earlier chapters, but thesereferences are never essential to the flow of things.[</p>

The ideas expressed in this book areintended to give a fair representation of how mainstream economiststhink. Of course, there is room for disagreement over specifics, andany particular economist would surely want to dissent from some of thethings that I say. But I believe that most economists who read thisbook will agree that it accurately reflects their general viewpoint.[</p>

Attentive readers will observe thatthis book applies economic reasoning to a vast array of human (andsometimes non-human) behavior. They will note also that when a questionarises regarding the range of applicability of an economic principle,the author always prefers to risk error in the direction of beingoverly inclusive. I believe that the laws of economics are universal;they are blind to race and blind to gender. I am therefore confidentthat no attentive reader will mistake my repeated use of the genericpronouns "he," "him," and "his" for the exclusively masculine pronounswith the same spellings and pronunciations.[</p>
