"Under the JMSDF's [Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force 海上自衛隊] naming conventions, the ships are called [g]oei-kan (護衛艦, lit. escort ship) in Japanese and destroyer in English."  Naturally before the end of World War II, destroyer was 駆逐艦 (Japanese pronunciation ku-chiku-kan--all Chinese pronunciations for respective kanji).
