John W Miller, WTO to Fault China's Curbs; Defense of raw-material limit
rejected, paving way for rare-earth complaint. Wall Street Journal, July 5,
2011
(paragraph 1: "The World Trade Organization is set Tuesdat to condemn China for limiting its exports of major raw materials, rebuffing Beijing's arguments that curbs are necessary to protect the environment, according to trade diplomats and lawyers")

My comment: Wired News service has confirmed the report just now.

("However, seafloor sediments have not been regarded as a rare-earth element and yttrium resource, because data on the spatial distribution of these deposits are insufficient. * * * Uptake of rare-earth elements and yttrium by mineral phases such as hydrothermal iron-oxyhydroxides and phillipsite seems to be responsible for their high concentration. We show that rare-earth elements and yttrium are readily recovered from the mud by simple acid leaching")

"Over the past two years, hourly wage rates in China have increased by 50% for Brooks Sports Inc., which makes running shoes and apparel. Because of the rising yuan, the company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is speeding up plans to manufacture goods in other parts of Asia.

United Technologies Corp. "employs around 17,000 people in China, and over the last five years, wages for its workers have doubled, says [CFO Greg] Hayes. Mr. Hayes says that in anticipation of rising labor costs, the company will likely ramp up automation efforts in its factories in China. For instance, UTC has replaced some workers at a smoke-detector assembly factory in Guangzhou with machines that place components on boards, says Mr. Hayes. The machines, while expensive, eliminate labor and drive productivity, he says. As labor rates increase, Mr. Hayes says, automation would help in reducing the size of its work force in China.

My comment: Automation to combat pay high in China? Why not move back?

My comment: There is no need to read the rest. The 8.7m in a billion amounts to 0.87%.
