Hysterics. Defense News, Jan. 26, 2010.

"A U.S. government source said they most likely would be smaller than
conventional diesel attack submarines currently being deployed by China and
other regional navies. Taiwan does not need deep submersibles due to the
shallow waters of the Taiwan Strait, he said.
"Taiwan's Air Force also received a briefing from the U.S. Air Force on the
General Atomics MQ-1C Sky Warrior tactical UAV in 2009. The Sky Warrior is
an upgraded unarmed variant of the Predator.
My comment:
(a) ISR is acronym for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance.
(b) Chung Shyang UAV 中翔無人飛行載具. See

Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE; 2009 台北國際航太
暨國防工業展覽會; sponsored by semi-official 中華民國對外貿易發展協會) was
held Aug. 13 to 16, 2009 at Taipei.

(d) The Defense News report says, "Nien-Dzu "Andrew" Yang, deputy minister
of defense for policy, has denied media reports the Navy wants to procure
eight Perry-class frigates from the United States to replace eight Knox-
class frigates." Perhaps the Ma administration declined the US offer out of
concern of endangering detente with China. If Pres. Ma loses re-election
bid, as expected, Taiwan will reclaim the offer.

Quote:
"The administration put off actual sales of newer F-16s, but if the study,
which will be conducted rapidly, determines that the jets are needed, they
will be authorized in the coming months, said officials familiar with the
arms deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
"The Pentagon considered authorizing the submarine feasibility study to
examine whether they should be built in Taiwan or bought from a foreign
supplier in Europe. The submarines could cost as much as $4 billion.
My comment:
(a) Only page 1 of the five web-page report concerns Taiwan.
(b) It is apparent that US will unveil more weapon sales to Taiwan. Today's
announcement is merely a beginning.
(3) John T. Bennett, DoD's '11 Budget: $10.7B for F-35, $4B for New Bomber,
More for SpecOps. Defense News, Jan. 28, 2010.
My comment:
(a) I intentionally do not provide a link, for this report does not say much
, except a sum for what project.
(b) VOA Chinese only two weeks ago reported that US was planning for new
bombers. This Defense News report states that the $4 billion over 2011-15
will restart "an on-again, off-again effort" to study what kind of bomber
will be "appropriate for future decades."
