Quote:

(a) "In the almost 20 years since the first self-checkout machine appeared — believed to be at a Price Chopper grocery store in Clifton Park, N.Y. — almost 100,000 units have appeared at retailers, said Lee Holman, an analyst at the IHL Group.

(b) "Although some may think that the self-checkout system is more susceptible to theft, studies show otherwise. Theft deterrents on the self-checkout machines include integrated cameras, scales, security tags, and, in some cases, laser analysis of dimensions of the products, according to Greg Buzek, president of IHL Group.

“'Our studies show [retailers] lose less with Self-Checkout because most front-end theft at stores is due to employee theft or a customer in partnership with an employee,' he said in an e-mail.

My comment:
(a) Dorchester, Boston

(a neighborhood of Boston; named after the town of Dorchester in the English county of Dorset, from which Puritans emigrated)

(b) Clifton Park, New York

(a town in Saratoga County)
(c) I am unsure what "front-end theft" means.

Can it be this?

Joanne Friedrick, Business Trends: Stop sticky fingers. Seafood Business, Feb. 1, 2010.

("While shoplifting is a major concern, so too is employee theft. Exception-based reporting at the front-end - a type of data analysis that compares current data against a base and looks for anomalies - can be used to flag all kinds of unusual transactions")
(d) I have never used a self-checkout lane. My impression is that a checkout clerk hs to enter different codes for different vegetables or fruits that are loose and do not have a bar code. I simply do not know how it works for self-checkout lanes. But I know it works, because I have seen people doing so smoothly without a hitch.
