(The Pentagon has also brought five Growler electronic attack aircraft. Britain is relying on British Tornado GR4 aircraft to attack ground targets, using guided Brimstone missiles. France is using the armament-air-sol modulaire (air-to-ground modular weapon), a munition involving a 250kg bomb guided by a global positioning system)

("targeting pods (which enable pilots to tell if people are carrying weapons, day or night, while flying 6,500 meters/20,000 feet high)")

My comment: I can not find any support in the Web that a targeting pod will do this sort of things. A pod is a case by definition. The most frequently mentioned "targeting pod" is
AN/AAQ-28(V) LITENING Low Risk, Next Generation Targeting Pod. Northrop Grumman, Oct 20, 2010.
http://www.es.northropgrumman.com/solutions/litening/
("a self-contained, multi-sensor weapon aiming system that enables fighter pilots to detect, acquire, auto-track and identify targets for highly accurate delivery of both conventional and precision-guided weapons. LITENING AT features advanced image processing for target identification; coordinate generation for GPS weapons")

LITENING is pronounced the same as "lightning."

(However, the lack of specifics provided by Tsai, who claimed Taiwan had sources unavailable to its allies, has led some analysts to conclude that rather than a brand new type of SRBM, the DF-16 could in fact be a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) already known to US intelligence, the CSS-X-11)
