The navy | The Spirit of 1812; The service hopes to restore its prestige by celebrating a forgotten conflict. Economist, May 19, 2012.

Quote:

"it was the heroic performance of America’s frigates against the world’s most powerful fleet that saved the young republic from possible extinction

"90% of trade now travels by water.

My comment:
(a) Battle of Baltimore
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Baltimore
(Sept 12–15, 1814; Result  American victory[,] British withdrawal)
(b) War of 1812 was supposed to end with the signing of Treaty of Ghent (Dec 24, 1814, at Ghent, now in Belgium). But Andrew Jackson did not know, so Battle of New Orleans took place on Jan 8, 1815.
(c) This is the official bicentennial website:
War of 1812. Naval Historical Center.

(d) Economist is based in London. I am unsure whether US navy then saved the nation single-handedly. See
