My comment:
(a) The journal said, "Well, put not your trust in princes. (That line does not originate with me, just so you know.)"

THE PSALM, 146:3 (King James Version)
http://www.bartleby.com/108/19/146.html
("Put not your trust in princes, NOR in the son of man, in whom THERE IS no help" (emphasis in original))
(b) docent (n): "a person who leads guided tours especially through a museum or art gallery"
www.m-w.com
(c) terlet (n): "Mispronouciation [sic] (redneck style) of 'toilet'"
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=terlet
(d) The journal commented, "With a local man, I discuss Taiwanese athletes abroad: There have been some major-league baseball players. The man says, 'You have to remember that, on the whole, Asians are smaller and not as strong as Westerners.' I think, 'If a Westerner — if an American — said that, he would be tarred and feathered.'"

It is true, about "tarred and feathered." But I learned lessons here (in US). A few years after I came to US, I had a hard time understanding why Jimmy the Greek was fired: what he said was universally accepted in Taiwan (we came to our own conclusion, not indoctrinated by whites) and I thought what he said was a COMPLIMENT to blacks (thus I could not comprehend what blacks were uproarious). See Jimmy Snyder

(1918-1996; section 1.2 Controversy)

(e) bloom is off the rose
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bloom_is_off_the_rose
("The person, object, or situation identified in the context has lost its novelty, freshness, appeal, or acceptability")
(f) glower (vi): "to look or stare with sullen annoyance or anger"
(g) The journal remarked, "By the way, it’s remarkable how many readers are married to Taiwanese women! (I have not heard from women married to Taiwanese men.)"
