(book review on Anand Giridharadas, The True American; Murder and mercy in Texas. Norton, 2014)

Note:
(a) Rais Bhuiyan
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rais_Bhuiyan
(b) “‘The people [Americans] around Rais,’ Mr Giridharadas writes, seemed to him to live largely unobliged to their parents, their teachers, even in many cases their God. They had no one to answer to.’”

synonym for
obliged (adj): “thankful, grateful, appreciative; beholden, indebted, in someone's debt, under an obligation, obligated  <f you should hear from her I'd be obliged if you'd let me know>”
(c) “Before he [Rais] could answer, [Mark] Stroman shot him in the head with a double-barreled Derringer pistol.”

Derringer
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derringer
(this misspelling soon became an alternate generic term for any pocket pistol; A derringer is generally the smallest usable handgun of a given caliber)
(d) “The author * * * is an enterprising and clear-eyed reporter and a generally smooth writer, though every 20  pages or so there appears a glistening chunk of linguistic gristle.”

gristle (n): CARTILAGE; broadly :  tough cartilaginous, tendinous, or fibrous matter especially in table meats” that is difficult to eat
